Stray Shadows: The Growing Crisis of 6 Million Dogs in Peru’s Streets

It is estimated that there are only about 6 million stray dogs in Peru; of that number, 4 million are in Lima (Voz Animal, 2018).


The average number of stray dogs varies between 45 and 75 per neighborhood. The most significant number of dogs was found in ​​the city's urban area (Peña et al., 2016), and it can harm human health due to parasites in fecal feces on the soil of public places (Marde et al., 2004).


In the Túpac Amaru urbanization of the city of Cusco, there are 437 dogs stray dogs (37% of the dog population in this urbanization are stray dogs) eating in the garbage dumps in different parts of the urbanization.
